I have a theory. So, in the wild weak or “wrong” animals will die and the strong will survive to make babies which we all know. Well cancer is genetic so in the wild cancer genes won’t be passed down because the animal will die. In humans we have figured out how to help with cancer and have saved millions. This mean we might be making cancer happen more and more. Hmmm. Im wondering what the quality of the studies are. How they determine that they dont get cancer. We are talking about animals that have been essientially hunted to small populations. This extensive hunting may have culled out the vast majority of individuals that were susceptible to cancer to begin with. Things that are cancerous and sick, may be unfit for the demanding proccess of natural survival becomming prey to man and other predators, removing them from the gene pool. This would serve to reduce the factors increasing cancer within populations to essientially exogenous causes such as carcinogens and radiation and natural mutations.
Their reproductive rates also tend to be much slower, which means that any genetic factor would propagate slower through their populations. They are also mucj slower growing than other animals or more correctly they have more cycles of growth spurts in their life time. And what this really means is that we just haven been finding the cancer.
I do wonder though if we took one of these large animals and feed it large amounts of refined sugars, restricted its mobility, subjected it to heavy stress, and surrounded it with large ammounts of known carcinogenic materials, what would happen.
