Steve Vai should get an Oscar for acting like he can't play that part.
Fergus MacLoud
@WARMOTH this whole thread is about that part Vai failed on at the end, I don't care even if you are right, but Vai played the classical, Cooder did the slide blues. OK? Jesus christ...
WARMOTH
@Fergus MacLoud he played all blues battle parts and the 5th caprice :) cooder was a beast !
Fergus MacLoud
@WARMOTH I am well aware Cooder did the bluesey parts.. I can read the credits, but thanks!
Fergus MacLoud
@WARMOTH The last part? The classical? He played them both(Steve) you can hear it... just switched guitars..
WARMOTH
@Fergus MacLoud no, the blues part was played by RY COODER

Steve Vai played flawless, even when he tried to simulate a mistake.

I don't even think Steve Vai knows what the word mistake means

One of the best guitar scenes in cinematic history. Of course Steve played both parts. He also wrote the winning guitar piece.
mrbinx51052
@Luke Cage Ry did play Ralphs part and he smoked it....
SpecialK 33
@lordtryforce agreed on both movies. Another for me was when Bill and Ted came back from the future w/the long ZZ Top beards and did “the perfect rock song”.
Mr. Yea
i dont think he wrote it but it was more of a rendition, if thats the right term, of Paganinis 5th caprice

Are you insane? Steve Vai couldn't play the slide like that in a million years. In fact, only one person can play the slide like that - Ry Cooder. Ry played all the kids parts and composed the soundtrack for the film.
Mats F.
Remember being glued to the tv as a kid watching this.. and my dad went and got my first guitar.. greatest time of my life !
Textra1
I feel you brother. It was the same for me at age 15. 35 years later and I'm still playing.
FLIPSIDE 3D
This was when I thought Steve Vai was human after all.......then I heard about how he had to practice to make that mistake

Love this comment and btw your dad rules

Wholesome stories are rare!

Fun Fact: Both sides of the duel are composed from parts played by Steve Vai, Ry Cooder and Bill Kanengise.

We need a tv series about Vai's character 20 years later... perhaps opening up his own guitar class. Cobra Vai never dies!

Made 5.8 mil in box office. Now has 50 mil views. You take half of that and multiply it by average ticket price (about 4 bucks) and its over 50 million. Crazy how the entertainment industry has went from having such low audiences that well marketed, hollywood productions with a popular lead actor can't gain enough traction to get off the ground, to now over 50 million people (over 10 mil more than the entire population of Canada) watching a clip from it for free and enjoying it. All due to the internet.

@Frost Fire X Hendrix doesn't compare to the likes of John Petrucci, Synyster Gates, Jason Richardson or Angel Vivaldi in terms of anything. He has the fame while more talented players like Manuel Fernandes still don't get the recognition they deserve due to peoples' interests. He may have contributed to a lot of things, but a lot of guitarists outclass him in creativity and technique.

Steve Vai is one of the most incredible guitar players of all time! Watching Ralph Macchio try to play is hilarious! Not only is Mr Vai an awesome guitarist, he's also one of the nicest guys I've ever met in my life! Rob Zombie's a nice guy too
ReesSoft
Considering Macchio is not a guitarist I think he mimed pretty well. He had guitar lessons for 2 hours a day to try and get him to play fairly authentically. He obviously can't compete with Vai, who's one of the best of all time. It's a film.
Robert Sampson
It's a movie man. Don't be so serious.

Damn...nobody told me that Ralph is so good, that the sound comes out, even before his fingers get to the note.
Putrid Fetidini
@mike reed Michael J Fox took it upon himself to actually learn his guitar parts in Back to the Future. That's actually him playing Johnny B Goode. (Mostly).
Putrid Fetidini
@Aussie Redneck Singer you should have told Michael.
CSharp
@Anon WhoFulton who/what? I was referring to you saying he didn't play.
Anon Who
@CSharp who's "wrong-ish"?? I was talking bout Fultons point.... not the karate kids chops! 😉
CSharp
@Anon Who Errrrrrrrrr, wrong-ish. According to American Blues Scene's website: 'Did Macchio actually play guitar in the movie? - The short answer is yes, in some parts. Director Walter Hill had hired guitarist Arlen Roth as a musical consultant and to teach Macchio to play, sort of. Roth visited Macchio’s home, four days a week for months teaching the young actor blues techniques, including finger-picking and slide. Although Ralph was set on actually playing in the film, Roth, Cooder and Hill knew that would be impossible, but Roth tutored Macchio well enough for him to fake the parts on screen. Fusco adds, “He (Roth) was first and foremost the guy that Ry sought out to assign to Ralph as his guitar mentor and ‘crash course’ teacher. They pretty much lived together for the few months leading up to production. Arlen was also on set all the time and a part of the amazing musical pedigree we were absorbing every day, down there in the Delta. Ry and Steve Vai are mostly responsible for the licks we hear when Ralph plays. But I want to emphasize that Ralph did much of his own playing and it was impressive. He is a smart and diligent kid. Wait, he’s not a kid any more, but he still looks the same.”' I had also read about that ages ago in a guitar magazine, before the internet became a thing.
Aaron Barber
I love how vai ends his solo with that run and then a tri-tone.. such an incredibly tasteful musician

This movie is right up there in my favourites list, I think I watched it first when I was 14. I hadn't yet started playing guitar but I used to love listening to Pink Floyd,Black Sabbath, Dire straits etc. My cousin showed me this clip and we ended up waitching the movie together. He is long gone and I am 35 now but the memories keep knocking this way or that. Love you Bulu, miss you ❤️❤️

@Brandi Barrera steve vai was in a couple of EXTREMLY famous and profitable bands: white snake and david lee roth formerly of van halen. Hes the guitarist david chose to follow in eddy van halens footsteps when dave left van halen. THIS should give you an idea of just how great steve vai plays because eddy was 1 of the greatest guitar players who ever lived.period..Hope this helps you out. ROCK ON

Well, I didn't know I wanted a movie with Ralph Machio shredding a guitar. This is on the list of must watch movies now.
Jas
@Aaron Shoaf It would have been awesome to learn that Ralph Machio did actually know how to play that well, but yeah, I figured from the start he was just acting it out.
Aaron Shoaf
He didn’t actually play for real, he just mimicked it, and made it look real. Steve Vai and Ry Cooder played all of the solos in this battle
Barry Brownless
So glad this great bit of music popped up, so good to hear again as I’d forgotten this gem!!👍
Paul Hogan
Steve Vai said one of the hardest things he's ever done was mess up on purpose in that scene
Jon Parker
Steve has a great story about his audition with Frank Zappa when Steve was just a wee lad of 20. Touring with FZ was probably the greatest lesson he ever had.
Cassian Andor
As a guitar player, I was impressed how Ralph Macchio was able to convincingly mime guitar playing. When I first saw this movie I was convinced Macchio played guitar for real.
R. Occam
I had a musical spoiler of a friend, unfortunately. Punched him in the arm. Learned of Ry Cooder's contribution that way, though.
Cassian Andor
@Swampster70 you missed my point, I play guitar, so I know what guitar playing looks like. And 98% of guitar miming in movies and TV is super fake. And not just guitar but drums and other instruments too. For example just watch any movie like when they are in a country club or something and there's a jazz band playing music, watch the "musicians," and their miming isn't even close to what you're hearing. That's why I was impressed with Macchio, he for the most part at least looks pretty convincing to amateur guitar players, and probably even more convincing to non musicians, so to actually look convincing is a rare thing.
Cassian Andor
@can we get 500 subscribers Chet Atkins aka Mr. Guitar can fingerpick that fast, Leo Kottke, John Fahey maybe, Al Dimeola, Paco de Lucia and probably other classical/flamenco players can fingerpick that fast.
Carl Williams
I noticed how his eyes were glued to the fretboard. I thought: Anyone that could actually play that well, would be relying on muscle memory, more than sight.

They're legit a year apart. lol
Shayne O'Neill
@Alex H Well theres humble and theres humble. When your walking around the land of gods, things are different. Vai has a reputation to uphold, so encountering Guthrie would probably be pretty nerve wracking, because Guthrie is frighteningly good. I could definately see why Via might get a bit crazy eyed around it. But I get the feeling if a 10yo kid came up and said "I just started playing guitar, can I show you this song from the 70s I just learned", and let rip on a hamfisted version of smoke on the water, theres a good chance Vai would stop and listen, tell the kid it sounds great and encourage him to keep practicing. I've never seen Vai shit on a beginner. He wants kids to learn and grow up to be gunslingers like him.
Albert Casper
With inhuman skills...

his reactions to guthrie govan suggest a little different

The strange thing about this scene is that a lot of the bits Vai played earlier were technically more difficult than the final bit he messed up on.

This is not what rock guitar music is about! It's about playing from the heart , not the ego! There is no better players or worse players
