Glenn Gould plays Bach - The Goldberg Variations, BMV 998 (Zenph re-performance)

Description from Zenph's website:

Glenn Gould's debut album of Bach's Goldberg Variations was recorded in June 1955. The Columbia LP quickly became one of the most revered piano recordings ever made and Gould became the most famous classical artist of the day. His exciting, unorthodox new way of playing Bach left listeners awestruck and critics around the world hailing him as a genius. But until recently this iconic album was limited by the dated recording technology of its time.

On September 25, 2006, history was made again. Zenph Studios recorded its debut re-performance® to standing ovations in the CBC's famed Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. The date would have been Glenn Gould's 74th birthday, and what a gift Zenph created to give his fans.

The Zenph re-performance is a revelation in its clarity, depth, and vibrancy. Gould seems to play at an almost inhuman speed and yet with complete accuracy. The 30 variations dazzle the listener with their inventiveness and variety. As music historian and Gould biographer Kevin Bazzana writes in the CD's liner notes, "Here, albeit with his trademark vocalizing no longer accompanying the performance, Gould's musical personality is unquestionably present..."

I prefer the real recording to this reproduction. There are nuances that were not passed, it's terrible, we don't need it.

Reading the comments I think that a lot of people here don't really get it that this recording is NOT one of Glenn Gould's playing. It's an AI player piano bot that attempts to reproduce his exact pianistic nuances - and it does this pretty well but not perfect. If you A-B this with the original 1955 Goldberg recording you will note subtle differences. First and foremost, the Zenph AI's performances is recorded on a totally different piano and the tone is not as brilliant as the Steinway Gould used for the original recording. Next, though this reproduction is a tech tour de force, it is still in the digital realm, and no matter how many different levels of force it can repro, it is only a digital approximation of the infinitude of Glenn Gould's touch. It is a simulacrum - by definition not real. As "lousy" as the original was, I much prefer it to this version. To comare, listen to the original at

This doesn’t sound right at all. You’ve taken out the feedback loop of Glenn Gould’s ears and nervous system. It’s like the difference between a live bird in flight, and tossing a dead bird into the air. If a listener can’t hear the difference, then I suppose it doesn’t matter to them. But perhaps if they listen to Mr. Gould a little more, the spiritual mysteries of music would begin to reveal themselves. Otherwise, why not just read the sheet music?

This spoils enjoyment in any other interpretation - even his own in the early 80's. I know, it shouldn't but it does. Simply, pure perfection. Every note reverberate with my soul.

At Bach's time, there probably were good keyboard players (BACH himself, it seems) that interpreted Bach keyboard
pieces as intended by Bach. But the instruments of the time were much inferior (except some organs, maybe), and of
course there were no recordings. Then, when piano improved and become a much better instrument to play Bach, Bach music was not very "popular". When Bach's keyboard pieces became more appreciated again, and the piano was well "perfected", the "romantic" way of playing (put "artificial" emphasis to say "oh, see how strong my feelings are") was the "standard", and we had to wait for Gould to finally have Bach keyboard interpretations played in the baroque style as intended by Bach and in a perfect instrument for these pieces. (As always, it is probable that someone before Gould interpreted Bach pieces in the style Bach thought them, and in good perfected pianos, but was not so talented or was not at the right place and at the right time as Gould was).

I have been given grief for the statement that "Glenn Gould Plays Without Ego." Let me explain, he plays "With Ego", in other words he has a very powerful personal interpretation. But I wholeheartedly know that his interpretations get to the emotional core of the music, and that ultimately is egoless.

@Piano’s Blox World They were jealous of his success, it’s true, but also couldn’t understand his approach to music in the context of the way the piano was customarily played during his early lifetime. They were used to soppy, extravagant gestures; Gould’s inner laser-like control felt like a reproach to the way they played, to everything they were taught to believe was “artistry.” A good part of it was that he was Canadian, too, at a time when that meant “second-rate colonial.”
