A new age begins September 2, 2022. Journey to Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

---

About "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power"
Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Either going to be a masterpiece or a complete trainwreck, no middle ground for TV shows like this one.

@Kamil M. Oh that's what will break your suspension of disbelief in a show about magic, Elves and Dwarfs? The funny thing is that as long as the actor is good at their job the majority people don't actually notice or question it.

@David P yes I understand your standpoint on the topic. But to be honest I have never seen a problem with someone from the lgbtq+ getting a role of a character that isn't part of that community. The whole argument is about the identities of the characters being changed, not that of the actors playing them. The outcry against the Hobbit movies is also already known so I don't get that Point either. In the lotr faramir was indeed misrepresented but for the vast majority of that trilogie, nothing world shattering was done. The vast majority of Tolkien critics loved those movies. I don't think that most People in this comment section are being bigots, some for sure but not most. At the end off the day all characters in Tolkien were white and straight (you may correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that I am). So to change this doesn't make a lot of Sense. It just shows that the production team wants to make this clear "we are very inclusive and have made a lot of changes that no one asked for, that don't make a lot of Sense either but we did it anyways just for you!" And that reasoning is just dumb... People can identify with characters based on their traits, not their gender/race/sexuality, to say that those things are more important to those People in it self is kinda racist/sexist in my opinion.

We should set the bar very low, I really doubt it will be really good. :/ But idk, I don't want to see it as deconstruction of Tolkien's work, just some tv show amazon tries to do and who cares if it's crappy, I'll watch it once, say "nah, not good" and then be done with it. I'm looking forward to the War of the Rohirrim animated series though

Cate Blanchett's voice fit the role so well, it was described in the book as "deeper than a woman's want" but still melodious, I don't know of anyone else's voice that fits more perfectly than hers. It will be something to get over to hear a higher pitch voice play Galadriel, but I still have high hopes for the part.

@Jan Pavlík its based off the Second Age and the Silmarillion barely covers the second age with only 2 or 3 chapters. It would be more accurate in saying the show is based on Unfinished Tales as that is where majority of Second Age material is found and the show will use as source material. Also there will be stuff from LOTR appendices too. Second Age is weird because there isnt one book of Tolkiens that covers it, its covered over several books.

@made bymonkeys Uhmm. Yeah. Thank you for responding. I already know that but still, it's just really weird that in the movies, it's kinda implied that Sauron made the 3 elven rings("It began with the forging of the great rings.3 were given to the elves. Immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings.") which is not the case because I believe Celembrimbor made the 3 in secret and even on his last breath, didn't betray the wearers of the 3. However, I believe this line "…..(given) to the elves" is more accurate lore-wise than the one in the books(which they quoted in this trailer) which is "3 rings for the elven kings" because you know, among the 3+ wearers, the only "elven king" is Gil-galad, a Noldor king. The later ring wearers ain't no kings. Celembrimbor ain't no king. So are Cirdan, Elrond, and Galadriel.

    • made bymonkeys

      made bymonkeys

      14 ore fa

@Queen Beruthiel that vers was written long after the creation of the rings of power. The three elven rings were not made by sauron but by the elves themselves from whom Sauron learned ring law. He later made rings for the dwarfs and men. How ever, the one ring is a corruption that also effects the elven rings tho he never held them. Part of the one rings power was to control the other three, thus the spell written within it. "One ring to rule them all", it's why both Gandalf and Giladrel wear one of the rings without turning, but if Sauron possesses the one then he would have dominion over them also..... Does that help?

One of the only things they have revealed about this show is that they want to basically copy Game of Thrones. A terrible idea seeing as GoT tried to avoid copying LotR. LotR are trying to copy a franchise which tried to avoid copying LotR. Immediately, there is a crisis of Identity. Tolkein would not approve. I don't think the fans will either.

I really want it to be good. I have some concerns, but I want it to succeed. I think it's about time they reveal to us a proper trailer tho. We've been in the dark for far too long now, and the show will release September 2022.

Someone like my elderly father, who does have Prime but probably has no idea this show is coming, will pick up his iPad and be able to make the association. But it is also to help snare the fans of the books & movies who do not have Prime.

@Queen Beruthiel I don’t think Gandalf is supposed to be the one who wrote that poem. I assume it’s supposed to be ancient, perhaps written by Sauron himself (and did Sauron even know who had the rings? I’m not sure)

    • Thelaretus

      Thelaretus

      10 ore fa

@Queen Beruthiel I remember seeing the math somewhere, but Artanis Nerwen Altariel/Galadriël was born to Arafinwë Ingoldo/Finarfin and his wife Eärwen, in Eldamar in Y.T. 1362. Checking here very lazily, she was already one hundred and thirty-three tree-years (at little of a thousand sun-years) old when the Darkening happened, and she went to Middle-Earth as an Exile on her own volition, seeking power and adventure. Then there were more 590 Years of the Sun until the beginning of the Second Age. Therefore, as this series is set in the Second Age, she should be anything between sixteen and fifty sun-centuries old. By 'The Lord of the Rings' at the end of the Third Age and the beginning of the Fourth, she should be eight thousand sun-years old. So here she was at least three thousand years younger, or probably more, but still at least 1500 sun-years old. At little past age 8000, she entered the White Ship and sailed through the Straight Road to the Immortal Lands where she still lives. 'Three rings for the Elven-kings' is how Tolkien wrote it; old style English uses an epicœne masculine that includes the feminine as well, so 'kings' also covers her. Also Nówë Ciryatan/Círdan was King in three separate occasions -- in Falas, Balar, and Lindon after Gil-Galad, but he was humble enough to avoid any title other than 'the Shipwreck' (Ciryatan/Círdan) which was really the only nameor title he used. Keep in mind 'King' and 'High-King'are different titles. Still, he was the oldest of the three and a relative of Elwe Þindicollo/Elu Thingol, meaning he was of ancient royal houses.

@Nerdelbaum Frink I understand the point that you are making, but you've created a bit of a straw man here. Anything can be made to seem foolish if you take it to the extreme. It seems unlikely that Tolkien fans would be against inclusivity per se. They only care that the characters look approximately as Tolkien described them. If a character is described in the text as fair with blonde hair, some would prefer that the series remain faithful to canon and depict that character accordingly. If you were to adapt a novel based on African mythos in which the author described the majority of characters as black, you would certainly protest if Amazon decided to depict many of the heroes in that mythos as fair-skinned and blonde. Is that not the case? I think there is room for diversity in Tolkien's world in the Second Age, just as long as the characters are depicted in a way that does not actually contradict what Tolkien wrote.

If its Galadriel's voice we hear it surely does not sound like a woman mighty and considered equal even above the more powerful of elven men, but a proper and nice woman. Its a voice even Annatar of the 21st century could appreciate. To be fair though, I doubt it would be easy to find the combination of beauty, height and depth Blanchett possessed.
