VARAITA MAIRA KAMMSTRASSE (RIDGE ROAD) // OFF-ROAD West Alps Italy // KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

The Varaita Stura Kammstrasse (Strada dei Cannoni) was the second track on day 5 for us. After we said our goodbyes to Valle & Friends we continiued on the Maira Stura Kammstrasse (ridge road) for a little while. A quick lunch break and tank stop later we found ourselves riding a very long and exciting ascent to the Varaita Stura Kammstrasse - which is similar to the Maira Stura - a road that follows a mountain ridge.
We were already pushing our limits timewise as we were close to sunset when we approached this track when Thomas KTM broked down with a dead battery halfway to the tour. The rest of the trip became a motorcycle rescue adventure which we have come so familiar to the days before but see for yourself!

    • MotoVibes

      Mese fa

We actually did put a battery in the KTM the next day to see if the alternator was broken or if it was indeed the battery. It seems that the bike needs a somewhat functioning battery to run - the power from the alternator alone was not enough - that is why our jump starting excersice failed - the bike kept dying after it was running for a bit. With a little bit of throttle it would run a bit longer but as soon as the rpms dropped the bike turned off.

Tip! When towing a bike use the footpegs.
It's more stabel that way cos of a lower center of mass.
Just wrap around 1,5 time and stand with your foot on it and in case of emergency lift youre foot and the stap wil slip off. On to the next adventure :)

@MotoVibes I live in Toronto now, but spent the first 10.5 years living in Calgary, an hour or so from the Rockies. I sold my 640adv to buy a house and start a business, I bought a new 2017 Husqvarna TE300e for enduro riding in the mountains. Am now bike less and am very pleased to see the new 2021 KTM 1290 SAR is on the way. I have a feeling it will be my bike of choice, and will eagerly await your review once you get the chance to sample it.

      MotoVibes

      Mese fa

@Leo O'Neill that is very cool - where in Canada do you live? I used to live in the USA for a few years myself but I only got back into riding motorcycles once I have here in Europe.

    • Leo O'Neill

      Leo O'Neill

      Mese fa

@MotoVibes I agree that the North American markets would warrant an early release due to the huge customer base. That's not the only problem we have in the motoring and moto industry, lots of UK and Euro models don't make it across the Atlantic for whatever reason. Many cars and bikes you get we don't, something I miss as an Englishman. Love the channel and it's great content, like you I love riding on and off road, it's one of the reasons I came to Canada 11 years ago. I bought a KTM640 ADV and traveled for a year across the US and Canada off road for as much as possible. I loved it so much here that I kind of stayed.

    • MotoVibes

      MotoVibes

      Mese fa

@Leo O'Neill I am counting on my friends at the Enduro Action Team to get my hands on riding the new R in its natural habitat but it will likely not be before May of this year. I don't really get the delay for the North American market either - I know the S model was not available for a long time when the predecessor came out. I would have thought that the USA/Canada are a key market for KTM.

I admire you so much for towing Thomas especially on the off road section! It is so incredibly physically and mentally demanding! Unless you have done it, you will know what it takes! Thank you so much for the subtitles. I love the traffic jam with the steers/bulls. Cheers

    • MotoVibes

      MotoVibes

      Mese fa

@Patrick Cooper You know what - Thomas already has a 2020 1290 SAS in addition to his 1190 Adventure R - he is actually going to sell it again because most of his riding focusses on off-road riding these days. His third bike is a 350 EXC which he has been riding all winter. I totally missed the KTM Adventure Rally announcement - I always wanted to participate in it and I just saw it is sold out. Also, we have plans in September to go back to the West Alps if the situation allows and I am signed up again for the Adventure Ride Competition with the Enduro Action Team in September as well. I will have to keep my eyes peeled for next years Adventure Rally ;-)

    • Patrick Cooper

      Patrick Cooper

      Mese fa

@MotoVibes Okay, so now you know how you can tow another bike!! My solution is: you sell your bike to Thomas and you get the 2021 1290 SAS!! I know it is sold out, but any chance that you might/could attend the KTM ADV Rally in Greece in September? I know that you are an extremely busy rider between riding hundreds of kilometers to get to your destination, riding these crazy mountain passes, uploading the videos and you also have a full time job! Sorry if I ask too many question! Cheers

    • MotoVibes

      MotoVibes

      Mese fa

@MotoVibes HI, Thank you for your very informative answer regarding the Helite E-Turtle Airbag Vest and, because of its design, the fact of wearing it more onroad rather than offroad. Very interesting point of view especially if you are going for a dayride onroad then offroad and back onroad, just to be aware to take it off & put it away somewhere when riding the offroad section !!! Did you add the sensor sold separatly that Helite recommends to install on the front fork to make it respond even faster in case of an impact when connected to the sensor inside the vest (Helite is talking about a time of detection of 31 m/s à 35 km/h ? Thanks for your reply. Cheers. Marc

    • MotoVibes

      MotoVibes

      Mese fa

Hi Marc - thank you for your kind words. I have had the Helite e-Turtle airbag vest now for a full season - I still think it is the best product on the market right now for onroad riding. I really like the freedom it allows to move on the bike and for less than 2 kg of weight you get amazing amount of safety packed in. Since you commented on this video - the e-Turtle vest is not really meant to be taken off-road. Also, it is not very comfortable riding with it in the standing position for a long time - the vest pushes up against my neck in the back. That is why you do not see me wearing it in this video (and the other off-road videos). The airbag vest had to stay back at the camp site. I am hoping that we will see airbag vests that are specifically made for off-road riding - Helite and Alpinestars were equipping Dakar riders with electronic airbag vests this year - let's hope this tech will find its way into the market soon.

Weil deine ganze Videomaterial absolut in mein Geschmack!
Vielen Dank!

Last but not least - man kann alles mit der kostenlosen Version machen!

Not gonna lie, I am insanely jealous of the riding you get to do. Awesome videos too.

Thank you very much. It was the only trip last year and I am glad it turned out to be so special in every respect. Thanks for watching 😉
